A gross meal I had today

This is not the first noteworthy thing that has happened to me in Japan, or even a noteworthy thing at all, but for some reason, eating this meal is what sparked the idea to make a livejournal account for all of you to see so that you could have some idea of what was going on in my life. Actual things of interest, culture shock woes, etc, are to come as I have the free time to type them up.

A Gross Meal I Had Today:

I ate out today, using my usual method of ordering food in a different language: picking a main dish I understood about half of the words for (it was something something soup and noodles), and a side dish that I could understand (egg). I ordered the egg expecting that it might be fried, or boiled, or maybe scrambled into my soup. What i was NOT expecting was not only would the egg be tossed into my soup raw, but that something something noodle soup came with its OWN raw egg, and I had now put myself in a position to eat two of them.

Not one to back down from a food related challenge, as those of you who know about my exploits in China can attest to, but one who is thoroughly disgusted by slimy food or anything vaguely resembling mucous (sp? i don't feel like googling it right now), I buried the eggs under the steaming noodles in a desperate yet futile attempt to cook them.

After about fifteen minutes, I could see that I was going to have to eat these raw eggs if I was going to quell my grumbling stomach, and eat them I did, practically gagging with each bite, and apparently providing a great deal of entertainment for a group of elderly Japanese businessmen across the restaurant.

A far cry from the grossest thing I have ever eating (sea slug), but still, I have now added the characters for "something something" noodle soup to my repertoire, and will be as weary of them as I will be of ordering eggs when their method of preparation has gone unspecified.

Comments

haha, I also HATE raw eggs! I do not know how people eat them!!!! However, if you have sukyaki, it is actually bearable to eat raw egg with that...

Thanks for posting your livejournal on facebook- Im looking forward to reading about your adventures and observations in Japan!! Sometimes communicating can be a little frusterating- its interesting to hear you comment on some Japanese peoples passive-aggressiveness etc...
